Let Us Imagine A New Haiti

By Marlon Migala

Let Us Imagine for a moment.....
A stronger Haiti past the pain
Let us consider the patient Resilience
Of a People who have endured
Despite being largely forsaken, for many decades,
By the world community
If there is a silver lining to this tragedy
Spawned by an earthquake beyond imagination
A once in 200 years catastrophe
That has cut short the lives of 300,000
From New York to Amsterdam, from Seoul to Sydney
The world of men has been forced to empathize
With the people of Haiti
“There but for the grace of God go I”
They have arrived by plane and boat from China
And Cuba, the U.S.A. and France
Ideologies set aside in service to their fellow man
Tears having been shed
By both victim and rescuer
By children now orphaned
By doctors amputating the sorrows
Of the innocents so injured
By the hurt and hungry
Huddled in makeshift shelters
Waiting in line for handouts of food and relief
From U.S. Marines and U.N. Peacekeepers
After the tears and the heartbreak
After the dead have been buried
After the rubble has been cleared
And the displaced have departed

Let us imagine a new Haiti
Its energetic and creative people
Working to build a new and better Haiti
With the aid of the world community
Standing in Solidarity
With its Haitian Brothers and Sisters
To construct a society where none would starve
Or be in need of a home that’s fit to live in.
Where good health care is guaranteed
And disease is controlled
Clean, safe water for all
To quench the thirst of hard working Haitians
Creating the society that was meant to be
When they were trail blazing
The liberation from slavery
Two hundred years ago.
Their hard fought and brave gift
To America and the world
That God’s people of all colors and ethnic backgrounds
Should be free
From the shackles and chains
Of inequality, prejudice, racism and inhuman oppression
To pursue life, liberty, and happiness.
Free at last
Thank God to be Free at last.
